17th March
Well, currently I'm not a forensic scientist - at
least not in any official capacity. I'm unemployed and looking for
work. I've applied for a job with two of the four main private
providers, but I've heard nothing back yet. I've also applied for jobs
in other areas of analytical chemistry as it looks increasingly likely
that whether I want to forensic science or not, forensic science
doesn't want me.
30th March 2012
I
am currently a forensic scientist. I have been working for the Forensic
Science Service in the UK for over eighteen years, but as part of the
on-going plan by successive UK governments to commercialise forensic
science this country, I will lose my job at the beginning of May. As
with around 90% of those who worked for the FSS, it is probable that I
will leave the forensic field. This is partly through choice, and
partly, at quite a bit past thirty-five, the "market" considers me too
old. If I do leave the field then I will have a lot more to say about
what went wrong, is going wrong, and will get worse in the future. But
until then I'll follow
Cordell
Hull's advice and wait until I've crossed the river before
insulting the alligator.
